Followng the "call for proposals" after the Diabetes Innovation Exchange we are working with Entec Health Ltd and Aranz Medical Ltd to implement a new 3D wound imaging system called Silhouette® in Derby Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust in collaboration with Derbyshire Community Healthcare Services NHS Foundation Trust.
There are over 61,000 people with Diabetic Foot Ulcers at any given time in England and around 6,000 people with diabetes have leg, foot or toe amputations each year. In Southern Derbyshire Clinical Commissioning Group the annual major amputation rate is 1.1 per 1,000 people with diabetes; the majority of amputations being preceded by unhealed ulcers.
The Silhouette® project enables rapid escalation and de-escalation of patients with diabetic foot ulcers to and from secondary care, and increases accuracy and objectivity of assessments through use of 3D wound imaging technology. This will reduce the number of follow-up appointments taking place in hospitals, by enabling remote review of patients’ wounds in their community.
EMAHSN is working with Derby Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, Derbyshire Community Healthcare Services NHS Foundation Trust, Entec Health Ltd and Aranz Medical Ltd to implement the Silhouette® 3D wound imaging system as part of an integrated pathway across both primary and secondary care. EMAHSN assisted with the procurement of the system and worked with all partners to get the new pathway implemented in four settings following the Innovation Exchange event.
EMAHSN continues to project manage the implementation, supporting partners with communications and patient and public involvement. EMAHSN is also funding a thorough health economics evaluation into the service.
